HyCoSy

A HyCoSy (Hysterosalpingo Contrast Sonography) or HyFoSy (Hysterosalpingo Foam Sonography) is a procedure to check whether the fallopian tubes are patent. It is performed using transvaginal ultrasound after a thin plastic catheter has been inserted into the endometrial cavity via the cervix. Some ExemFoam, a gel/foam specially designed to be instilled into the uterus , is then instilled. The specialist doctor performing the procedure watches for the foam (which is bright) spill from the tubes into the peritoneal cavity, indicating that they are patent. The endometrial cavity/shape can also be assessed, to ensure that there is no polyp or intracavitory fibroid. Hydrosalpinx, or dilation of the fallopian tubes is easily seen during this test.

The procedure will probably cause some discomfort. We would recommend taking some paracetamol /NSAID’s an hour prior to the scheduled appointment.

It is very important that this test is performed in the first half of the cycle, usually Day 5-10. Please contact us to speak to one of our trained staff who will ensure that you are booked to have your test at the correct time of your cycle.
